Enabling Grides for E-Science in Europe - EGEE

The Enabling Grids for E-Science in Europe (EGEE) project is the largest Grid infrastructure project in Europe. It is currently in its third phase (EGEE III). CSCS and SWITCH have been fully funded members since the second phase.

EGEE-III organises its efforts through federations of regions. Switzerland is part of the DECH federation, including Germany and Switzerland. Due to its size and impact, EGEE has a considerable weight on the international scale and has entered into successful collaborations with other existing projects, within Europe and beyond; in particular: GÉANT, DEISA, SEE-GRID, DILIGENT. Relations to other projects include: OSG: OpenScienceGrid (USA), NorduGrid, EU-ChinaGrid, BalticGrid, EUMedGrid, etc.
EGEE is split into several activities, for services, networking (in the human sense of the word) and joint research. SWITCH participates in the joint research activities concerned with security, while CSCS, being the major Swiss EGEE site, participates in the service activity for the infrastructure, the networking activities involving application support, as well as dissemination and education.
The LHC Tier2 is set up as part of the EGEE-II infrastructure, and is operated by CSCS according to the EGEE-II mechanisms. CSCS also participates in the EGEE regional and global support teams.
